St Peter's, London Docks is blessed with a fine collection of post-war stained glass. Much of the glass in the church was destroyed during the Blitz. During the post-war reconstruction, the English stained-glass artist Margaret Aldrich Rope was responsible for much of the reglazing. Born in Leiston, Suffolk in 1891, MEA Rope was internationally renowned, working in the vibrant colours of the Arts and Crafts movement. Interestingly, Rope was also responsible for the stained-glass at St Augustine's Church, Haggerston. When St Augustine's was closed in the 1970s, the series of meticulously-detailed windows, teaching on the Seven Sacraments, was installed at St Peter's. They bear the memorial inscription to Fr Pollock, curate of St Peter's for over 40 years. He spent his final years at St Augustine's and gave the windows there as a thank-offering to that parish. They include an image of the High Altar, not of St Augustine's but of St Peter's! Happily, precious memories and precious windows were reunited in Wapping.
