This Church of England parish church in the East End of London founded by Father Charles Fuge Lowder and other priests of the Society of the Holy Cross has a long reputation for holiness and service. Father HA Wilson, for many years Vicar of S. Augustine’s Haggerston called it, “the holiest and homeliest church in London”, some things don’t change.
We are the Church of England Parish Church of Wapping and S. Katharine’s, from the Tower of London to the Prospect of Whitby. Our worship reflects the Catholic and formal tradition of the Church of England, but we are never afraid to laugh during sermons and announcements. The teaching is robust and orthodox and delivered with calm conviction.
Children are very welcome, we follow the children’s safeguarding policies of the Diocese of London with enthusiasm and care. We understand that children see the Mass differently to adults and that they join in in their own way. So, don’t get worked up when your vocal two year old adds to the service, we won’t!
St Peter’s is local and neighbourhood in style and ambition, it is the Church of England parish Church of Wapping, here for the people of Wapping whoever they are.
St Peter’s is in Wapping Lane, London E1, a short distance from The Highway. Nearest Tube Station: Wapping 200 yards
The Church is fronted by the great gaunt Clergy House, built as a memorial to Father Lowder and completed in 1882. It is still a home for the clergy and a centre of Parish activity. Christian Education, social events, meetings and interviews all take place here.
St Peter’s London Docks has an austere and gaunt frontage, inside there is beauty, holiness, welcome and a presentation of the Christian faith that is Catholic and warm, a faith for today and everyday. Come and See.
